the three-legged dog - Jake getting used to RECTface (3/6)

This is the third chapter of the short story I wrote called 'The Three-Legged Dog'. Please enjoy reading it.

As time went on, RECTface’s efficiency completely took over Jake's daily life. Unlike Cooper, the robot didn't make a mess of his room or climb onto his bed with its muddy feet. Most importantly, Jake was incredibly attracted to the fact that he didn't need to be fed, brushed, or have his poop cleaned every morning.

""RECTface, bring my homework bag."

"Okay, Jake. I'll bring it in ten seconds."

The robot carried out its commands without a single error. Jake had become accustomed to leaning against its cold metal arm, reading a book, or listening to its analysis of game strategies. The robot's occasional wry joke or cold tone still irritated him, but the drug of convenience quickly overcame his discomfort.

"Cooper, get out of here! I'm watching a movie with a robot."

Cooper, who was wagging his tail with a ball in his mouth at the door, disappoints at Jake's irritated voice. Cooper couldn't understand. Why was Jake, who used to roll around in the yard with him and sweat, now sitting on the living room sofa, staring at that cold, mechanical lump and a square screen?

Jake increasingly stopped going outside. The sound of the stream was replaced by the stimulating YouTube videos played by RECTface, which filled the living room. The more Jake focused on the screen, the more successful his assistance was, and RECTface’s eyes flashed yellow.

"Jake, you don't have to sweat outside and play with Cooper. There are more dogs doing more interesting tricks on screen."

Jake nodded absentmindedly at RECTface’s words. Next to him, Cooper lay alone in front of the door leading to the backyard. The golden Florida sunset bathed the yard, but now time seemed to have stopped for the boy and dog who shared that light together.

Before he knew it, Cooper's food bowl had become covered in dust, and his fur, untouched by Jake's touch, was losing its luster. Jake felt comfortable. The wet, affectionate feeling of Cooper's warm tongue licking the back of his hand was fading from his memory, as if it had happened a long time ago.
